Exploring the Northeast Region

We have finally begun our study of the United States regions. Our first region to explore was the Northeast region. Through our exploration of the region we took a "train tour" of some very famous and/or historical places. "Mr. Mariner", our conductor, led us through these stops and helped us gain some knowledge on why these stops are important to the Northeast region.

Some of the stops were...
West Quoddy Lighthouse, Maine -
Fun Fact: This is the first place the sun rises in United States!

Plymouth, Massachusetts
Due to bad storms in the Atlantic Ocean, the Mayflower was pushed off its
course to Virginia and sailed into Plymouth instead.

Erie Canal
The Erie Canal was created to connect the Hudson River to the Great Lakes.
But there was one problem! The Appalachian Mountains were in the way.
So the men who made the Erie Canal had to create locks to help move the boats up the mountain!

Independence Hall, Philadelphia Pennsylvania
This is the place where the United States was born.
On July 4, 1776 leaders from the 13 colonies met in Independence Hall to approve
The Declaration of Independence- a document stating they were now their own nation.

Roald Dahl Litertature Circles

For the past couple of weeks students have been working in literature circles using one of Roald Dahl's books. Students have had to become experts on specific vocabulary words as well as the assigned reading for the week. After completing their weekly assignments, students had to complete a role for their literature group. These roles included: Discussion Director, Yacker Tracker, Super Summarizer, Creative Connector, and Quotation Quest. We will be adding Word Wizard and Artful Artist next week.

Once all members of their group finished their work, students met in their groups and held a discussion about the assigned readings. Students asked each other questions and shared their thoughts using evidence from the text.
This group is reading and discussing their thoughts on the book, George's Marvelous Medicine
This group is discussing their thoughts on the second part of the book, James and the Giant Peach

These students are sharing their thoughts on James and the Giant Peach as well as some important vocabulary words.
